What is the Value of using a lumbar corset or back brace
Lumbar corsets are prescribed for management of back pain and after surgery of the lower back. this article discusses the value and controversy of using a lumbar corset.
What is a lumbar corset
A lumbar corset is an externally worn device which is applied to the lower back between the rib cage and the hips. It is used to limit movement to the lumbar spine, relief pain, support the lower back and ensure good posture of the lower back.
How does it work?
A lumbar corset supports the lower back between the rib cage and the hips. It gently compresses the abdomen and limits excessive movement of the spine. This extra stability reduces small, painful movements between the spinal segments and can help relieve mechanical lower-back pain.
What are the benefits of wearing a corset
A lumbar corset supports the lower back by limiting excessive movement. This reduces small movements between the spinal segments that may cause pain. It can be especially helpful for people with a slipped or herniated disc, spinal instability, or pain following back surgery, when temporarily reducing movement may make the back more comfortable.
What are the limitations of wearing a lumbar corset?
A lumbar corset can support the back and encourage better posture, but wearing it for too long may cause the body to rely on it. When the corset does too much of the supporting work, the abdominal and back muscles may become less active and gradually weaken. This can lead to greater fatigue and difficulty maintaining good posture without the corset. It should therefore be used for the recommended period and combined with appropriate core-strengthening exercises.
When may a lumbar corset be ineffective or unsuitable?
A lumbar corset may not work well or may be unsuitable in the following situations:
-
A very large abdomen or obesity: The corset may not fit firmly against the rib cage and pelvis, reducing its ability to support the lower back and limit movement.
-
Rib or pelvic fractures: Pressure from the corset may cause severe pain or prevent it from resting securely against the supporting bones.
-
Abdominal or back wounds: The corset may press against wounds or medical devices, such as a colostomy and its collection bag. This can cause pain, irritation, or injury, making the corset unsuitable.
People with any of these conditions should ask their healthcare professional whether a lumbar corset is safe and appropriate for them.
How long should I wear a lumbar corset?
A lumbar corset can temporarily support the lower back and ease pain by limiting excessive movement. However, wearing it for too long may allow the abdominal and back muscles to weaken and become dependent on the corset.
Wear the corset mainly during periods of severe pain or activities that make it difficult to maintain good posture, such as long car journeys, meetings, or prolonged sitting. When your pain allows, remove the corset so your abdominal and back muscles can work normally. Use the corset only for brief periods when extra support is needed. Avoid continuous use unless advised by your healthcare professional.
